Prof. Zagórski graduated from Medical University in Lublin, Poland in 1965, completed residency in 1972 and was employed at the Department of Ophthalmology in Lublin, headed by Professor Tadeusz Krwawicz. In 1974/75 he was a fellow in the Ophthalmology Department, University of Ghent, Belgium (Professor Jules Francois) and in the years 1985/86, 1991 and 2002 held Alexander von Humboldt fellowship at the University Eye Hospital in Erlangen, Germany, headed by Professor Gottfried Naumann. In the years 1991-2006 he was elected chairman of the Tadeusz Krwawicz Chair of Ophthalmology in Lublin Medical University. He published more than 200 papers and book chapters and edited 6 books, also attended and presented papers at numerous congresses in all continents. In 1994 he was elected member of the Advisory Committee of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), representing East and Central European countries till 2002, when he was elected the board member of ICO, serving till 2010. In 2003 he was elected member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (Chair XLVIII) and in 2004 of the European Academy of Ophthalmology (Chair XXVI). He is honorary member of several organizations, including Ukrainian and Polish Ophthalmological Societies and the Barraquer Institute. His main interests are ocular surface, dry eye, glaucoma, cataract and eye pathology. He was the first to show the replication capacity of human corneal endothelium in 1979, and in 1987 the influence of different oxygen tension on the proliferation of ocular tissues. He also performed innovative studies on the pathogenesis of the epithelial ingrowth. He was also active in educational activities of the ICO, including the residency curriculum and CME curriculum (chair). He is involved with editorial or advisory boards of several journals, including Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde, International Ophthalmology and journals in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania. He received several Polish and international awards, including the education medal of the ICO.
